Books open doors to imagination, knowledge, empathy, and lifelong learning. As a mother, I’ve seen that children are far more likely to become enthusiastic readers when books are woven naturally into everyday family life.

Reading is not just an academic skill. It is a way for children to explore new worlds, understand different perspectives, and develop curiosity about the world around them. When reading becomes associated with comfort, connection, and joy, children begin to seek it out on their own.

Parents who don’t like reading often find this challenging, and that’s totally understandable. However, the virtues of reading are so abundant that stepping out of our comfort zones to make reading a routine is worth the effort.

Start Early

Children can benefit from being read to from infancy. Even babies who do not understand the words are soothed by the sound of a parent’s voice and begin to associate books with warmth and security. Board books with bright pictures, textures, and simple rhymes are excellent first choices.

Make Reading a Daily Ritual

A consistent reading routine helps children view books as a natural part of life. Bedtime is especially powerful because it creates a calm, predictable moment of connection. Even ten to fifteen minutes each day can have a lasting impact.

Let Your Child Choose

Children are more engaged when they can select books that reflect their interests. Whether they love dinosaurs, fairy tales, trucks, or mysteries, following their curiosity helps build intrinsic motivation to read.

Create a Book-Friendly Home

Keep books visible and accessible throughout your home. A small basket in the living room, a shelf in the bedroom, or a cozy reading corner can make books feel inviting and familiar.

Visit Public Libraries and Book Stores

Libraries and bookstores are among the best resources for families. Many offer story time events. And in this digital age, walking around bookshelves and getting a whiff of the scent of paper books can be rather refreshing! It’s about the environment we expose our kids to. Technology is here to stay and to embrace but there is something very satisfying about holding a book and flipping its pages with fingers. The sensory stimulation is very powerful, and I don’t think that starting a child’s reading journey with digital books can be as powerful an experience.

Read for Pleasure Yourself

Children notice what we do. When they see parents reading books, magazines, or newspapers, they learn that reading is a meaningful and enjoyable part of adult life.

Avoid Turning Reading into a Chore

The goal in the early years is to foster enjoyment. If children connect reading only with drills and corrections, they may lose interest. Reading is not supposed to be a mechanical check-off. Shared laughter, dramatic voices, and engaging stories help build positive associations.

Talk About Stories

Ask simple questions such as:

What was your favorite part?

Which character did you like most?

What do you think will happen next?

These conversations deepen comprehension and show children that stories are worth thinking about.

Be Patient

Every child develops at a different pace. Some begin reading independently very early, while others take more time. What matters most is preserving a sense of curiosity and confidence.

Finally…

Children who love reading are usually raised in homes where books are connected to comfort, conversation, and discovery. By reading aloud, visiting the library, and modeling your own enjoyment of books, you can help your child build a lifelong relationship with reading.

How to Raise Children Who Love Reading One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a love of reading.
